Progear rings and jewels confusion

I've just started playing Progear in the past week and am trying to figure out the scoring mechanics.

From what I understand when you're tapping the A button, and you're in regular mode, enemy bullets will turn into rings when the enemies are killed?  You then have to hold down A to suck these rings in, right?

So, the secret to building up your stone counter, and having the enemies drop big jewels, is having a high ring count.

The jewels are dropped when you kill enemies by holding down the A button, right?

How do you balance out the rings and jewels in order to maximise your score?

You're going to want to use C auto, and always look for it in all Cave games before you start practicing. You might have enable it in service mode. Wikipedia and Cave of Shooting actually give enough info to get going strong on Progear I think.

Thanks for the tip about using C auto, and I never thought that Wikipedia would have given such a detailed write up!  Great stuff!
