Getting the flashing "x30000" in MSF BLK God Mode?

Was just wondering, in order to get the flashing x30000 gems to show up when the multiplier is maxed out in god mode, does the gauge have to be flashing or does it still do it when the gauge is starting to empty out?

It only does is it when the chaining gauge is completely empty.
