CAVE Games / Re: Deathsmiles 2 [CAVE PCB, 2009]

I've been fixing some of these for a couple of friends.

Should have a list of suitable replacement boards in a few weeks.

Bear in mind that there were 2 motherboards which CAVE used:

GA-MA78GPM-UD2H

and

ASUS M3A78-EM

It doesn't look like the operating systems are interchangeable.

CPU is often a 2.6ghz Athlon, but I've seen a couple of 2.7ghz in some (there does not appear to be a difference in speed/gameplay)

Also, the ribbon cable coming off the custom JVS I/O to the motherboard power headers is wired differently on each motherboard. the JST connector needs to be modified/replaced if you're swapping the entire motherboard.

PCB / Re: Full list of Cave PCB revisions

Deathsmiles II
Version 1.00 (undumped?)
Version 2.00 (undumped?)
Version 3.00 (undumped?)
Version 4.00

I have a version 2.00 dongle, but the CF card was trashed. Not sure if that should matter? Maybe the dongle can be patched to work with the existing OS.

Happy to give this to anyone who is interested.

That is correct.  All of the early CAVE PCBs (68K based) are custom jobs and wholesale conversions/bootlegs do not exist.  The only "conversions" that can be made are swapping the ROMs to change region or game revision, but you would still need a legit board to do it.  That ESP Ra.DE. is 100% a legit Japanese version, it's just missing the serial and had the ROMs swapped or reprogrammed for some reason.  In fact, the ROM chips look exactly the same as the ones on my board (same markings/brand), they are just missing the numbers on the white labels.

In fact, the only bootleg CAVE games out there are the PGM based ones (Edit: Progear CPS2 bootlegs also exist), and even those look absolutely nothing like the originals and are easy to spot.

I suppose that conversions of the CV1000 games are possible, as CAVE themselves did this all the time, but I've never seen one that was done outside of the ones released directly from CAVE.  Even then, you would need to start with a "cheap" game like Mushihimesama or Espgaluda II in order to even make one, and most bootleggers and lowlifes wouldn't go through the trouble with that big of an upfront cost.

Agree with everything Peg said about esprade.

As for CV1000, don't forget you would need to reprogram/desolder the sound chip ;) I think these were done in factory for each game.

Yeah, I'm 100% behind you on that. My top 4 favourite games are among those. DSMBL, Futari BL, Akai Katana and DDPDFK  :righton:

CAVE Games / Your favorite three-year period of CAVE arcade games?
« Last post by EOJ on May 31, 2020, 11:43:11 PM »
My favorite period is 2007- 2010. I think this is CAVE's absolute peak output in terms of quality.

You have:

Muchi Muchi Pork!
Deathsmiles
Mushihimesama Futari Black Label
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Ver 1.5
Deathsmiles Mega Black Label
Deathsmiles II
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label
Akai Katana

That's such a killer line-up! There's also nice parity with four horis and four verts.

What say you?
