I recently bought this game (US PS3 version, since the US X360 version won't work on my JPX360 and I don't feel like paying 2x the money for the JP release), after reading many positive comments about it. So far, after playing it a few hours, I've been pleasantly surprised. It has nice side-scrolling/platform sections, a decent 3D fighting engine, and an interesting story. I also like how the protagonist isn't a feminine teenage boy out to save the world, like so many other cookie-cutter Japanese games (though unsurprisingly, the Japanese PS3 version includes just such an alternate protagonist). Graphics are nice, but the music is nicer. It feels different from most other recent action-RPGs, reminding me more of older games from the 16~32bit era.

Another aspect that may appeal to shooting game fans is many enemies and bosses spew out complex bullet patterns, just in 3D rather than 2D. It's a surprising and welcome feature I've not seen in other 3D action-RPGs.

I bought it about a month ago, not got round to playing it yet as ibara and drakes 2 are taking up all my time.

It got very mixed reviews over here,  but I stil liked the look / style. I've not read any comments about complex boss patterns so that's a massive bonus. You've just brought nier to the top of my pile of games to play :)

I'll stick it in this weekend at some point.

Protip: the camera is a little wonky at first, but you can customize it, so if you tinker a bit you should be able to find a setting that works for you.

Most of the stuff I heard from people was that the game was just too average and that nothing stood out. Then again, if you like this game and you liked Lost Odyssey as much as I did, maybe I should give it a shot... Let me know how the rest of the game pans out

You can see one of the bullet patterns in this vid:

It gets interesting around the 2:20 mark.

I picked this up cheap on ps3 a month ago and played through, got all the endings and it was pretty good all the way through. The first ending is a bit 'eh' and then the others are totally miserable which was great.

Some of those side quests while tedious had pretty miserable stories attatched to them too like the old man that wants you to find his dog which is dead when you find it, then the old man is dead upon returning & his relative tells you the herb in the dogs mouth was the old mans heart medication.

It was great being able to jump from great heights and just roll safely before hitting the ground, and using the book as a gun was a bit of alright too. The weapon upgrading is taking the piss though, some of those items are very hard to get, I've done about half the upgrades but I'm having a hard time getting motivated to go back and do the rest.

I played this just after going through red seeds profile and getting a platinum trophy and I can't remember the last time I found two 3D games interesting enough to play through one after the other, usually at the end of one I'm too burnt out to start a new one, as I tend to stuff around a lot in 3D.

One thing of note about the ps3 version is that it has custom soundtracks. I didn't mind the soundtrack but after a while it was nice to put some other music on. I wish more ps3 games had that option since you can rip or import decent quality audio files unlike the 360 which rips some low level wma thing with no option to import pre ripped files.

Thanks for the thoughts, twoup! I've been on the fence about getting it even after hearing it from EOJ, but now with my cousin's recommendation and the stuff I read on the forums I suppose one of these days I'll get myself a copy...
