Title: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread
Post by: EOJ on January 18, 2008, 08:04:44 PM
For me it's mainly Mushihime-sama [PCB] with some Mushihime-sama Futari Black Label runs thrown in from time to time. I'm enjoying the original Mushi quite a lot now. I feel the urge to top my old scores, and start learning Ultra mode.

Started playing Ibara again, i Might start looking into the boss milking to improve my score as i seem to be able to 1 credit this game on every go          :righton:   The only thing is i find milking so boring in games that i start making stupid errors as i try  not to go to sleep :|

Quotethis games impossibly hard so no clear for now.

I'm sure you could get a 1CC if you just didn't medal in a run (play it like GER). Otherwise, maybe you should try and do the infinite lives trick to clear the game.
Title: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread
Post by: Plasmo on January 19, 2008, 06:29:13 PM
To be serious, I'm actually completely desperated. I haven't experienced such difficulty before (maybe apart from doj second loop...) Not medalling isn't satisfying in any way, I wouldn't even make it to the highscore table lolz. I really need to consider trying other stuff like the infinite lives "bug". It's just not possible the regular way...

QuoteI really need to consider trying other stuff like the infinite lives "bug".

Consider it a "trick" rather than a "bug" and everything becomes clearer. Getting the trick to work is about as hard as 1CCing a normal Cave game anyway. After that the game becomes Score Attack PLUS mode! :righton:
If you want to compete with the scores of the top PS players in Japan (like Galford), you have to do this trick.

Pink Sweets is a very curious game that isn't meant to be played like any game that has come before it.

QuoteIt's just not possible the regular way...

After just having credit fed to the end of the game I must agree with this statement. Stage 6 especially is absurdly difficult and probably requires that you memorize it from beginning to end to stand a chance.
Title: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread
Post by: Plasmo on January 19, 2008, 08:40:11 PM
@Gakidou
Even if you memorize everything perfectly (which isnt too hard after spending hours on Score Attack mode) the Rank is what really kills you. Stage 6 in Arcade Mode is about 10 times as hard as the Score Attack Stage 6. The snake/laser section is *impossible* even if you play super safe only using your shield ITS JUST NOT POSSIBLE!! OMG!

This is getting extremely Off-Topic. Maybe you want to delete it EOJ.

DeathSmiles has gotten most of my money lately, as it's the closest Cave game I've come to getting a 1CC on, so I won't rest until that happens.  The place I'm staying right now has a little arcade whose shooter pickings are slim but quality: DeathSmiles, Ketsui, and Mushi Futari Black Label, all at 50 yen a go.  I gave Mushi Futari a few goes on both Original and Maniac, but haven't touched Ketsui--it seems like one of those that would require a lot of consistent practice.

Back where I normally stay, ESP Galuda II, Dodonpachi, Ketsui, and Muchi Muchi Pork all get a little play when I'm waiting for someone else to get off the DeathSmiles machine.

For the past two weeks, Ketsui non-stop. I had a party to play Rockband last Friday and had the candy cab and Robotron cocktail on on for those not playing RB and Ketsui turned so many people off that I put in Mushihimesama. The next day I played a few rounds of Mushi and immediately swapped Ketsui back in. I'm really into it right now. The stage 3 boss is kicking my ass.

Playing a combination of DOJ (trying for 100mil+) and Dangun (1CC).

Its depressing the amount of time I've put into DOJ for the crap score I have, hopefully I'll get a run which pulls all the practice together soon...

Mushi tama is a lot of fun, but pretty difficult. Totally worth it for $200-$300, but I wouldn't pay much more for it than that (I wouldn't pay more for ANY puzzle game than that!).

After having it sit on my shelf for what seems like an age, the impending release of Daifukkatsu has inspired me to have a proper crack at DOJ.

It is not going well so far.

I think a rank-managing 1st loop clear might be do-able but I don't have the time, energy or patience for 'another Ikaruga'.

It is a quality game though.

Mushi Futari 1.5 ULTRA MODE with RECO. I watched SWY's replay a few times today, studying some patterns, and I got a new high of 110mil with Reco, up to the stage 2 boss.:)

I'm also still playing Mushi Futari BL God mode, but for some reason I'm finding Ultra mode more alluring for the time being...

I'm back to Mushi Futari BL Maniac mode, going for the 700+mil clear. I came pretty damn close just a minute ago, lost an easy 40-50mil on Stage 2, another 30mil on stage 3, but still got to the last boss with 660mil. Too bad I had no lives left. If I could keep everything together from start to finish, I'd have over 700mil by the last boss, then possibly close to 800mil with a clear.

I'm nearly 100% bored with this game, playing exclusively for the achievement. Doing too many runs and repeating the easy stages too many times is incredibly tedious, practicing with save states was much more fun.

starting to get much better now...starting to exploit milking and really work the mulitpliers.....

i can consistently make it to the 4th stage with around 70mil....which is good for me.....i can no miss the first 2 stages,no bomb....sometimes the third.....usually not tho

and then i start dying all stupidly at the beginning of the 4th stage and almost always tap out on the midboss....

ive only made it to the 5th stage a handful of times....and promptly died....lolz

oh well......new mushi PCB in a couple weeks and then its on to maniac mode......bring it on!!!

Don't give up even if you completely hate the game by now. The feeling of achieving something you've worked hard over many years on is the ultimate goal in life. :righton:
yeah, I'd feel a little bad if I gave up now. It will feel really good when I'll finally be freed from this game though ^_^

MMP is a lot of fun initially, but once I maxed out my score and cleared it with all the characters, I soon got tired of it. Honestly, as far as Yagawa games are concerned, I think Pink Sweets is the better game, I've been playing that for over a year and I still really enjoy it. If you like Ikeda games better, try Futari or Futari BL (really cheap at Legend right now!).

iv'e played a few credits on it and i do like the game a lot  =D i have two yagawa this and ibara, what im going to say people will hate me,i think he makes great games but they are not great cave games when you compare these games to guwange, mushi, deathsmiles, and even espgaluda they are not in the same league,i don't think i will buy anymore yagawa games i will stick to ikedas he's the man  :righton:
i will take it back iv'e said  been playing it solid for the last few days and i love it,it has a great scoring system,i don't find it that easy to be honest i think both mushi original mode and deathsmiles are both a lot easier, not sure about the whole cute thing though your right eoj the boses are tops,my favourite cave boss ever is the weird baby thing in guwange freaky  :o
im thinking of buying the box and artset now so i have a complete kit need to check my funds  :-\

Just got Deathsmiles yesterday & i gotta say - it doesn't disappoint  :righton:
I'm really liking the whole look of it, the gothic/medieval art design is like sugar for the eyes.Foot-tapping music & from what i can gather at this early stage, a really complex scoring system.
The complete polished package, can't see me playing anything else for a while  :)

Well I?ve been on a horrific spending spree over the last 2 months.

Pink Sweets
Futari 1.5 (trade)
Death Smiles
MMP

I?ve yet to play Death Smiles, but for my money Futari is the best Ikeda game since 2000 & MMP is the best yagawa.

I?m going to be runnig:

Astro: Futari / MMP
Astro: Death Smiles
Egret 2: DDP / ESP rade

Pink Sweets just hurts me, it?s so ball bustingly hard. I?ve been toying with selling it on, but I always regret selling games, jesus I?m even missing Mushi Sama!

I sold Pink Sweets twice before I decided to keep it. I'm on my 3rd PCB and I'll probably keep it awhile, even though I've 1CC'd the game a few times.
It is one of the harder CAVE games ever released. Unless you put a lot of time in it and can trigger the infinite lives, you most likely won't see past stage 4 or 5.

Among the SH3 games, I've sold off MMP, Ibara, Espgaluda II, and Ibara Kuro. The rest I've kept. I thought I might miss them, but I really haven't. I guess I played them enough.

Well I've just been playing the Cave PS2 ports I just got. Although I must say I agree with most everyone that the Ibara port is so bad. It looks like purple sludge even with the patch. I've probably been putting the most time into Espgaluda. The scoring system is so addicting. Its cool to finally play newer Cave titles even though I'm still not that great at the ones available in emulation. I'm probably the best at Esp Ra.De. even though I'm not that great at it. DDP games on the other hand slaughter me.

yeah, i agree with what you're saying (on both counts).  i hate selling stuff, especially these types of games because even if you've rinsed them, the playability is still there (unlike caning an rpg, or whatever).  i always used to say pink sweets is like the new batrider.  great game, but nobody outside a single-digit amount of people in japan know how to get these crazy high scores.  i'll keep plugging away though, and perhaps one day a video will surface......

and if you haven't tried it yet, score attack mode is really good in pink sweets  (hold A+B when you press start, after entering a credit)

Well I don't "need" to sell any of them just now and I can wait for a real price drop on DFK before I I reconsider.

I have tried the score attack on PS. It & the normal mode are the only ones I can even look at. PS is great fun to begin with just gets too hard by Level 3/4. My scores are so poop it laughable & I struggle to trigger the 1up's on level 3. I think a long bout of unemployment is the only thing that couls help me get better at this game as it requires / deserves a lot of time.

I still see MMP as Batriders sibling. MMP & Futari are the keepers for me :)

I finally got a chance to play Espgaluda 2 today at the Rack 'n Cue on the San Francisco State University campus. It looks like nobody had been playing it because I overwrote a bunch of the default high scores. The level design is really creative in this one. I love the stage on the water (stage 2) with all the little flotillas of ships going around. Graphics are amazing too...quite a treat to see a game on the SH-3 hardware finally.

Been playing Dodonpachi DaiOuJou since getting the PCB on average for 1/2 hr a day for about three weeks.
I love it to bits. I love the pain. I love the way it's so hard that when something becomes clear or you fluke it through some mad patterns, it's like the best game ever.

I reached the stg 4 boss on a credit for the first time last night, mainly owing to getting the 2nd extend middle of the level.
I'm still not very good at scoring at all, but getting better at the beginning of stg 1 for some extra points.

I love the way it rapes me. =D

I?m at that point again where I have a new game & I?m not immediately taken with it.

IKBL is the current one that I?m struggling to like. I think I?ve played too much Ibara (and loved it) to change over.

I?m also playing Progear on my new cab and not liking the scanlines on the 31k monitor.

Sometimes I know that I?m being a twat, but I just can?t help it.

Is that the NNC? For some reason scanlines on tri-syncs are far less noticeable in tate.

It is mate. I've pumped the contrast up to 95 & brightness to near 0 & that softerns them, but it's a little too garish. The pic in 31k is unbelieveble though & the screen seems bigger for some reason (I know it's not) must be the lack of curvature

Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine, co-developed by Cave - says so right on the title screen. I got a code for the closed beta and figured I'd try it out.
Unfortunately, it crashed on me just going to look on the status screen after I leveled up and since I am not a fan of MMO's, I think I'm just giving up. Kind of neat to see Cave working on something like this. It looks like it'd be fun for MMO players and SMT fans, but since I'm waaaaay more of the later, I'll just play Persona 4 instead.

Mushihimesama Maniac. First time around I hated this game, but second time I?m in love with it. L3 is so good, if a little easy. L4 on the other hand?? Those worm things are a total bitch.

I can?t believe I dismissed this game so quickly last time.

Mushi Futari 1.0 Original mode! Easily the best Mushi Original mode ever made. I'm trying to clear it with Reco, but it's
hard as hell. Maybe I should switch to Abnormal.

Also some Pink Sweets normal mode w/ Shasta on the side. Trying to get my infinite lives groove back.

See this month's competition for my current choice of pain (Galuda Arrange).

Note to self: Never watch another MMM replay. I hate those situations where you watch a kick-ass vid and think to yourself "Ahhh OK, I get it, I get it.." then fire up the game, only to get killed/drop points in exactly the same fucking places as before.

Futari Black Label - God mode w/ Palm.  I've only just started playing seriously with Palm
but already I'm having a ridiculous amount of fun. It's harder to get to grips with Palm, but in God mode, he's definitely the best.

I haven't played anything (or posted here for that matter) for ages, just not enough time and its summer here, but have recently been getting a few goes in on daifukkatsu before work in the mornings on power mode with the chopper mostly. Gotten to the 2nd loop now but still have a terrible score and no idea how to chain well.
Still, I LOVE the game and can't see myself getting bored with it for a long, long time.

i'm trying to re-read through all the old pink sweets threads   :o
galford's email address has been deleted, nothing new on nico, and i'm kinda losing hope on ever learning the real secrets of this game

what's sparked me back up is i was trawling through gamebox's site, and a guy there had a 8.8mill score attack record with kasumi (who i love for that mode).  oh, and trawling through dozens of japanese blogs trying to find something/anything to no avail  :(

it's a shame you never had a video recording setup dude.  i guess you don't have the game anymore either?   :-\

had a couple of credits on pink sweets a second ago.  man, even with auto-B i can't figure out what the hell they must be milking on score attack.  probably way off, but the only thing i really noticed was lots more destructable bullets.  i wonder if it's possible to generate a variable extend, and in SA mode, it gives you +1mill instead...??  none of the midbosses are really worth anything if you milk them.  and neither are the laser turrets (at best, you are maybe talking 20k).  and whatever it is they're milking, it needs to be *really* beneficial ... and FAST.  there's no point in spending an extra 1 minute to milk 50-100k.  each minute milking needs to be giving you a whole million for it to be worthwhile, otherwise you'll run out of time...   :-\  the stage itself is about 9 minutes, and about 2-3 to kill the boss.  if galford reached the boss with 6 mill and 2 mins left on the clock, then he took 11 minutes on the stage, ie only an extra two minutes of milking.  i didn't notice any real effect from auto-B on the last boss either, although i was dying a lot and credit feeding.  man, i wish i could figure this out.  and i can't get used to lace, at all..!

I was thinking about milking the second midboss with Lace's shot. It's quite beneficial, but not quite enough. :-\ Maybe with a high rank you could get enough points from there? I never played with autofire so I don't know, but I have a feeling that this midboss is important. This is probabaly the wrong topic, let's continue discussing in the strategy section if you want. ;)

I played it hard for about a week after I got it, but had to give it up to get the battery changed before it bit the dust. I've never gotten to really put serious time into this game, even though it's one of my all time favorites.  It's always a credit here and a credit there at someone's house or arcade. Can't wait to really dig into it.

Playing DOJ and Ketsui at the moment - the full dose of 2002/2003, CAVE's best days if you ask me. Slight improvement at Ketsui, but I'm getting better everyday. Can finish Stage 2 with 41m maximum now (incl. bonus), my max score is atm 109m. Will try to beat CRI's 180m before I have to give the game back to his actual owner  >:D
DOJ is something I have decided to really start when I don't have Ketsui no more. For now all I can do is a 240m score, but this was due to a really lazy broken chain in stage 5. There was a 1500 combo and another 1000 combo, but the break was at a stupid point in the stage (middle of the combs, usually if I break my chain it's at the beginning, never inbetween). If I had got a 2500 combo or so I could easily have beaten PLASMO's 440m :(
The PS2 analog stick is also ripping my nerves into tears. I will probably wait untill I can afford a MGCD ps2->jamma thingy untill I continue playing this one seriously.

I'm taking a break from MMP, since I don't think anyone is going to beat my Ikuo score anytime soon.
So I'm alternating between MFBL God mode w/ Reco (I want to get a 3.5+bil ALL) and DDPDFK1.5 w/ CP & BS (I'm also fooling around with the A ship but I'm not sure what will come of that).

Probably going to continue playing Futari BL Maniac.  I got the 1CC yesterday and was pretty stoked, but I don't think I'll be satisfied until I get at least over 400 mil.  Once you figure the stage 3 boss out in this mode, it really is not all that hard.  Futari has so many explosive enemies everywhere they get you out of the bullet swarms.

Been toying with Ketsui but...for whatever reason it just doesn't grab me as much as Futari does.  Neither does Deathsmiles MBL since I generally suck at death mode, but that ice palace level is really fun with Sakyura...

Eh, I don't think 1-lifeing the first loop of MMP would be any fun or even achievable for me, at least with Ikuo. And if you play like that you can't do any of the fun suicide boss-milking in the first loop. I'd rather focus on improving my 1-ALL score.

in my 178mil run I ended the stages with:

st1: 22mil
st2: 42mil
st3: 72mil
st4: 122mil
st5: 178mil

So it looks like 50mil on stage4, and 55mil on stage 5. I can end stage 3 with about 80mil now (I've done it a couple times), and I've gotten over 60mil on stage 5 before, so 190mil is hypothetically within my reach. I'm too busy playing Daifukkatsu though!  =D

I've never felt stage 4 was too long, but stage 5 is pretty long. I quite like it though, I'm always disappointed when I get to the end, because I want to keep scoring!

Just hold the lard attack. Even if your gauge is empty.  This has saved my ass in more than a few spots.

You end up using your lard attack just about every 2 seconds once you get good at all of the stages, so it's not much of an issue for me. I start many of the boss fights off with a full lard attack, it causes a lot of much needed slowdown on the second phase of the stage 4 boss, for example.

even if it's  only a +10 mill increase i just wanna see some progress.

i think i did my best st. 3 yesterday with a +600 combo and x2 bee. (did +600 befor but not with that high score)
if there wasnt that damn broken chain at st. 2 at that run i would have entered st. 4 with ~140 mill.
i think this is the absolute max. i can get for the first 3 stages without connecting the combo into the st. 3 midboss.
since the ps2 dvd player has 150 at this part i'm happy as a start with that. (ok he has 150 mill and 5 hyper )

tough question.  i have only connected into the midboss once (but i have only tried a dozen times), and in two dozen times, i have never chained the 1up cannon.

i think 1up cannon is more difficult on getting the correct timing.  stage 3 midboss more for survival because you need to leave enemies shooting bullets right in front of you.

best advise: try to connect a full stage 5 chain.  my score jumped up 200 million with this  :righton:

I normally have, if everything worked out in the former stages, ~130m at the beginning of Stage 4 (and one or two hypers). That includes a full stg1+2 chain (no hyper in 1) and a 450+600chain in stg3.
I don't think more is necessary. As jpj said, if you just chained stg5 properly this would boost your score ten times as much as some more difficult tricks in the former stages and is in fact much easier to perform.

Quotejpj what do you think is harder.
connecting the combo into the st. 3 midboss or chaining the 1up cannon?

Actually I don't think it is possible to connect the combo into the st.3 midboss. Just in the second loop (combometer goes down slowlier) and in Black Label (by using a hyper). If you are talking about these strathegies in general I'd have to say that the 1up cannon is a bit easier as you can use the hyper to avoid most of the dangerous stuff. I once tried this and almost succeeded (in practice mode), but the wall came a part of a second too late to my combo broke at the end.

I gave up on playing PS.  There is no way I am going to clear the game without having autofire on the B button.  I have no autofire setup, so I will put PS on hold until I get one.

I just got DSMBL.  The game is fun.  The suicide bullets are destroying me on the last level, but eventually I hope to figure it out.

I am also playing MFBL, trying to clear maniac and godmode.  If I do that, then maybe I will clear MF1.5's maniac as well.

Eventually I need to finish Ibara and Esprade.  I have gotten to the last attack of the last boss in both games only to die.

Futari 1.5 Maniac w/ Reco and Deathsmiles (X360 port) Arcade and X360 modes w/ Follett. I'm working towards 700mil in Futari, and 300mil in DS.

Nearly sold Futari and a few other kits recently, but I reconsidered (actually my girlfriend talked me out of it!).

Decided to stop playing DSMBL and switch back to regular DS and try for a canyon clear.  It seems the options move a bit differently in the two versions.

I also swapped out MFBL for the regular 1.5 version.  I can get to stage 5 (maniac) in both versions, but was not having too much fun.  I decided to play some ESPG2 today.  Got to stage 6 yet again and credit fed to the end boss.  The final boss's last attack seems to be painful.  I then decided to just play some SNS for a change of pace.

I started playing Ketsui: DL (DS) to get my fingers moving at pace in preparation for Mushi Futari 1.5 which arrived today :)

(This is my first post..) I'm new to Cave games in general and am finding them to be very fun and rewarding (I bought Donpachi for PSX the other day too - and found that to be excellent) though I really am terrible at them so far!

Futari Ltd edition with phone card really hurt my wallet at ?100. Ouch.

Futari- but isn't everyone?
ESPGaluda- when DOJ pisses me off too much, I play this.

Been playing a lot of DoDonPachi lately. I introduced two guys I work with to a few shooters (they've never played any) and they took a really strong liking to DDP. They're even having a score competition between the two of them and one guy can already chain stage 1 up to the mid-boss after only maybe 3hrs of off and on play!

It does a little bit I guess but it still looks very good.  I really hope that future releases get an iPad resolution mode.  The size is really sweet for this type of game.

Of course you can play it in iPhone mode at the normal resolution and size if you wish.

I?ve been playing Ibara for the last few weeks. It?s making me less angry this time around, but it?s a hard slog.

Due to the rank, you need to keep your medals up & score well on each stage. If you miss an extend, run about with 3 lives in stock or stupidly play with 3 Napalm / homing missiles its game over very quickly :(

I prefer how relaxed MMP & APB are with rank, but I?m going to stick with Ibara until I can get to L5 regularly, then I?ll take a break for a month or so. When you figure out rank control it?s so much easier (but I still fuck it up more often than not)

I don?t know if it?s just my lack of experience with the game, but it seems to be pretty much impossible to come back from a mistake. I think that's the biggest criticism I have

Been playing DDP DOJ BL almost exclusively on 360 for 1-2 weeks.

I get completely trashed right after stage 3 midboss. I just haven't figured out the right way to handle the rotating disc barrage on top of the huge columns that take a ridiculous amount of fire before going down.

The one time I get to stage 4 I felt like a badass, but I've never been able to do it again.

I was going to upload my MBL 1.1 score to youtube until I watched it and realized that it's got a lot of really embarrassing mistakes. Started playing again; my new goal is to hit 1 mil on the counter before heading into an extra stage. I got 950k tonight, and it wasn't a perfect run by any means.

Once I do that I can focus on not losing three lives on Ozir. :|

Mushihimesama Futari 1.5, Original mode.

Been grinding away for a 330mil+ score with Abnormal Reco, she's fun but the deaths are becoming aggrivating especially in stage 4, looking to no-miss at least untill Larsa but it hasn't happened yet.  I did get a 337mil score that I may submit but I know I can do better if I get that good run.  I'm looking at 380million which would be great.  There's always something sneaky in stage 4 that gets me.  I did get to stage 5 no-miss today but got nervous and lost a life somewhat early in the stage, grr! But in that same run I no-missed no-bombed Larsa which was a first for me at least with Abnormal Reco.

Still trying to get the first extend before the midboss turtle in St. 2.  I've been getting closer.  Lovin' it... I'm surprised fewer people play Abnormal Reco, she really feels like the advanced type for people who are familiar with the stages, it's kind of a rush to get those options locked onto big enemies then making that mad dash to the back of the screen.  The way the options jut out when you first focus the shot seems to emphasize the green aura gem collection, they jut out then return to a neutral position (kind of closer to Reco) if they don't lock onto anything.  It's a good thing they do jut out like that or else she'd really be a pain to play.

The fun never stops with this game, and I've barely touched Maniac mode :O

I've recently unboxed my 360 again to play Futari. I decided to redeem my 1.01 code instead of selling it, so I'm playing Maniac. It's really cool, but the scoring is way different. Though the less scoring in a Mushi game, the better for me. None of the scoring systems have ever blown my skirt up.

EDIT: This is actually Dangun Feveron. I'm having a hard time with it lately. I went from getting ~4M+ and reaching stage 5 to gameovering constantly at the stage 3 boss or earlier.

Finally ordered a copy of Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 for the 360 and downloaded the Black Label DLC. I can't believe the level of detail in this game compared to previous Cave titles. I played Mushihimesama on PS2 but wasn't all that impressed with it, however I feel just the opposite about Futari. I can see why EOJ holds this game in such high regard. Now I just need to get a decent controller or stick for 360 since playing on a 360 pad is pretty much ass.

First, hi there everyone, first time user, long time reader (i saw Zatsuza thanks to you :D )

I am maso, in that i love cave shmups but am no good at them AT ALL (the only game i was remotely good at was Esp Ra De and i lost it all after a year of not playing it).

At the moment, i am playing DDP DFK on the 360 to relax (i have great fun with Blue/Strong) and ... i am ashamed... some more shoddy version of daioujou which i am dissecting to finaly know how CAVE do their great shmups (so now i know their bullets structure, how they check them against the player position, why some collide and others not etc, really instructive) :) To me, that too is playing~

I do have the Daioujou 360 game though, so i feel a little better about doing that.

Hi all.

I was a member here before - Rad, but i re-registered today as my old membership was cleansed (my bad, too much time away) :).

I am not playing anything atm but Fujita sent me one of their "brand new" Deathsmiles this morning w. EMS, so i am documenting on the game while i eagerly wait hehe.

I found the game system very well explained on another forum by EOJ i think, and i also study some videos.

From what i read DS is one of the easier Cave titles? I am curious because my other title is Ibara - horrible difficulty for a returning player of stg's (well Raiden 2 but still); wish i would of chosed galuda1 or Esprade as they had the same price tag and i understand they are more "friendly" to newcomers; i apologize in advance if this is not the thread for questions, but i did not want to overpost on my 1st visit in a long time, as i already posted a question in the HW page.

Just got my 2nd Cave port for the 360...Espgaluda 2. This game is freaking crazy. Now I really know what people mean by the visuals just being nuts. The game is damn pretty. I wasn't a huge fan of the visuals for Espgaluda 1 but this game is just breathtaking.

I've been trying to narrow down what game or two I'll focus on for the near future, but it's pretty hard because they're all so fun. Anyway, the past few days I've been playing:

SDOJ - X360 - Ver 1.5 - A-Shot
Espgaluda 2 - X360 - 360 Mode - Ageha
Futari BL - X360 - 360 God Mode - Reco
Pink Sweets - X360 - Ver 1.01 - Lace

I also played through DS II X-Mode once today.

Been grinding DFK 1.0 for some months now but I just can't seem to get passed the laser rings   Still slowly advancing. Was stuck on the fourth stage for a loooong while.

Taking a pause from cave games trying to 1cc some other games.
...though Im so stuck at watching Pink Sweets runs on youtube. The game looks like so much fun.

I played Futari 1.01 Maniac mode tonight. Got to Stage 5 with 100mil. :righton: I forgot how good that game is. Sometimes I like it even more than 1.5.

Nice. I have to try out 1.01 some day. Got it on the shelf.

I just dropped Guwange into a cab to get that 1cc, got to the last level on second credit....but I got to get some strategy for the squeeze.
And I always missed that big last energy drop from the spider.

Got that 1cc in Guwange.
After some practice in how to get that full life in stage 6 its quite doable, also to save bombs for the last stretch really helps.

Digged a little into the scoring system, great fun to get that gold rain but I didnt stay long as scoring isnt needed for any extends.

Guwange is amazing, especially after you learn the small extra tricks in controlling your spirit.
I def want to return to this game later on to do a better run and also incorporate more scoring.

Oh nice! How's it going so far? God Mode is such a fantastic game.

I'm currently working on it as well, trying to push my score further. RL's been incredibly busy for me this year but it's finally started to slow down so I've been trying to derust and get back into it. My plan was to focus on God Mode for the rest of the year and then move on to Deathsmiles MBL lvl 999 next year. But we'll see how it goes, it depends a bit on how far I manage to push the score in God Mode this year, still feels like I have a lot of work left.

I got 2.25bil up to stage 4 yesterday.  :displeased: Not very good, but, baby steps. I have to relearn the whole game, which honestly has been a lot of fun. However, I was never really good at the game and never had good stage 4 or 5 patterns, but I've been practicing Stage 4 a lot over the past week and can get 700mil there fairly consistently.

I'm thinking of buying one of those MFBL "Another Version" kits because it seems God Mode is unchanged there, and it's a lot cheaper than the actual JP PCB. Plus I don't really play the Original or Maniac modes in the game.

Nice! Sounds like you're making good progress! I remember that stage 5 took a bit of practise in the beginning due to all of the lanterns. Larsa obviously took a bunch of practise as well. Buying an Another Ver sounds like a great idea given the current PCB market. I have both actually but if I were to get a Futari BL PCB today I'd probably go with Another Ver as well. There are a few differences between the port and the PCB which may take a bit of time to get used to in the beginning. The differences are more noticeable the more you push your score though. I wrote down a summary of the changes on a youtube comment before (think it was on my 5.82 bil run on youtube).

Best of luck and keep up the good work!

Thanks. I bought the original Japanese kit on release back in December 2007 and played it extensively (I got my 855mil Maniac Reco score on that). I sold it after I bought the port because the port felt close enough to me (there are minor differences, but it's a very accurate port overall). But I'd like to give it a go again.

I lost $1000 selling my MFBL kit (bought it for $2250, sold for $1250 a few years later). It had the sticker on the box and was mint.  It also had an MMB- serial, which many of the early kits had.

I got 3.01bil in MFBL God Mode today. Pretty good run until I got to Stage 5 and suddenly realized I hadn't played it (in God Mode) since about 2011. Deaths left and right, game over at the midboss. I need to practice that in training mode for awhile.

I'm still playing 1.01 Maniac every day or two, as I really love it. I owned a 1.0 PCB kit soon after it released back in 2006, so it has a lot of nostalgia for me, even though it's not exactly the same on the X360 version. I've never 1CC'd it (PCB or X360 Maniac), though I have gotten close (Stage 5 Boss). It's on the list of games I'd like to 1CC before I die.

Good stuff breaking 3bil! Yeah Stage 5 took a bit of practise in the beginning I remember. Especially because of the suicide bullets from the lanterns. 3 bil by the time you reached the midboss means that it should be possible to get quite a bit more. Very nice!

After a lot of playing around with different Cave games over the past month I've settled on three games to focus on for scoring for the near future. Here are my targets:

Espgaluda 2 with Ageha - X360 (might get a PCB soon). Target: 500+mil ALL (this will take me awhile!)
SDOJ Arcade mode with Type A-Shot - X360. Target: 15+mil ALL
MFBL God Mode with Reco - X360 (should get my PCB tomorrow). Target: 5+bil ALL (this will also take me awhile!)

Anyone else working on any scoring targets?

I ended stage 2 with 1.59bil today in MFBL God, which (I think) is my best ever. Still need to work on consistent stage 3-5 patterns though, so I have a long way to go.

I didn't think I'd ever bother with scoring again, but I've rediscovered how fun it is. Even though I don't have much time to play anymore, I am still making progress with a credit or two every day or two.  And training mode sessions on the X360 are a great time-saver for fine-tuning scoring routes. :righton:

Respect for going for score in Espgaluda 2.
I 1ccd it and think it is quite a long struggling game especially if I would include scoring.

I remember standing behind a salaryman at HEY that looked like he lived in Zesshikai.... :o

One pcb is up on YJ:

I decided to practice stage 1 on Espgaluda 2 last night with the X360's training mode and after an hour I got 45mil. In my old 1CC on the X360 (383mil with Ageha) I got 27mil on stage 1, so this is an improvement! Training mode is a godsend for this game.

Now to practice stage 2 (and learn some good scoring patterns). I remember when I had the PCB in 2006/2007 and it was incredibly hard to learn good scoring patterns (this was years before the X360 port came out, and there were few online resources for strategies). My best score back then was 363mil (without a clear).

Awesome goals, EOJ! Sounds like you're doing really great in God Mode so far! Glad to hear! I look forward to following your progress!

Also, I feel like I'm in a similar boat - I don't have much free time at all (I try to play whenever I can, sometimes it's every other day of the week and other weeks I don't get to play at all lol - my past week was the latter unfortunately...) but working on your score is just so much fun. I'm currently trying to push my score further in God Mode as well. With my current routes 6.2 or 6.3bil should be doable if the stars align (current PB is 6bil) but I'm also working on reaching Spiritual Larsa on a scoring run (I've reached her before on runs where I ignore scoring). Biggest obstacle is of course Larsa for that - I have an ok route on her I feel but I need to polish up a few things in order to reduce the amount of mandatory bombs that I need to drop on her. For starters I need to stop doing the macro dodge on phase 3 since it's RNG whether or no she starts by shooting upwards or downwards. It's really scary to properly dodge that pattern so need to work on it in order to build up better consistency. Second thing I need to work on is the last pattern on phase 1. I make too large movements which causes the laser to miss Larsa on certain spots which forces me to drop a bomb on the later part of that pattern. I need to stick more to the center of the screen and make smaller movements.

The second obstacle for reaching Spiritual Larsa is of course overall consistency with my scoring route. This has gotten better and better lately, just need to keep working on a lot details I think.

Other than that I re-watched NAK's Stunfest runs and discovered a lot of small details that I hadn't noticed before. Definitely want to look into that as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks, and good luck to you in your scoring goals as well! I'm taking a break from God mode and mainly focusing on Espgaluda 2 for the time being. Actually the scoring systems in the two games are similar in some fundamental ways, and the skills required to be good in one are applicable to the other. I imagine you could do very well in E2.

I just saw your first stage run in Kuro (That was you playing, right?)
That was mind boggling, now I want to find the pcb even more.

Im still stuck with Pink Sweets. Playing with Shasta (Start)-spread special power up is the most fun thing ive done in a shmup for a long time.
I have to make it my goal to 1cc PS without the infinite lives trick.

No, that wasn't me. I think it was TGA-RET. I never had a chance to record any of my Kuro plays. I could get near 20mil on Stage 1 on a good day, though.

I'll always have a soft spot for the game, but it's actually not among my favorites when it comes to scoring. The scoring system is very frustrating and a lot of luck is involved to get a high scoring run. That is why I ultimately abandoned the game, though I am still proud of my 114mil score as not many people have gotten over 100mil in the game. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the few guys who got over 200mil, as that is beyond my skills (and patience).

I played it in Mame the other day and it's actually quite playable. Not perfect, but a lot of the slowdown is in there -- it's better than some of the ports!

Yes, I am also a bit torn about the scoring mechanic.
I like the XTC counter going up and so on...but scraping bullets gets tedious and slow after a while.

Current goal that has taken precedence over my previous goals:

Muchi Muchi Pork (PCB) - 200+mil with Rafute.

I can (just barely) see how to get there, but putting it all together in one run is proving difficult. Current high score is 163mil (without a clear, and with a chain break and many other big mistakes), so I will try to keep inching toward my goal throughout the year. Realistically, I probably won't reach 200mil, but I'll try to get as close as I can. :righton:

After this I'll try to get new scores with Ikuo and Momo again.

Awesome, good luck! 200m with Rafute is a great goal. She's too hard for me, so I don't think I could ever score that high.

If you want a checkpoint along the way, my high score with her on 1.0 (360) from some years ago is 181 million.
Title: Re: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread
Post by: EOJ on July 05, 2018, 11:32:17 PM
Rafute plays so distinctly from the other two. You have to really approach the game differently, which I'm enjoying exploring. I've learned how to position her bomb a bit better so it does minimal damage to the bosses. For example, I can get off one round of bomb-boss milking on the final phase (blue bullet spam) of the stage 1 boss with her, if I stay in the right or left bottom corner and don't move (but if I move, it tends to kill the boss). I can get nearly 20 mil on Stage 1 now.

181mil is really great, especially in the port that is missing a lot of slowdown (making it harder)!  :righton:

Great going EOJ, MMPs scoring system is quite fun I think. Someday I will return to MMP and try some Ikuo.

My fave scoring system is AK and I popped in the pcb the other day to show a friend, got 130mill in that casual run, got excited and tried yesterday again and got 160mill. So now I am also aiming for 200 mill.

Isn't it very satisfying being able to hit over 100mil on Cave games?  The majority of STGs don't score that high, but it's great on Cave games seeing your score shooting up like that.

I pretty much only play my MMP PCB these days, with some Futari 1.5 Maniac and BL God runs tossed in once in awhile to spice things up. I have been alternating between all three characters, after hitting a wall with Rafute. I have improved my score to over 177 million, but it's really hard to make progress with her! Her bomb is sorta random (as far as I can tell) and so you need some luck for a good run. If I could stop making mistakes, with my current strats I could get over 190 mil, but I always seem to make a mistake (or two, or three...). In a strange turn of events, I have really gravitated toward Momo, though the second half of the game feels a lot harder with her. We'll see what I can muster with Momo!

You can suck those in easily with the B button. And I like this design decision because it keeps you on your toes! Still, it is a lot easier to maintain a medal chain in MMP than in pretty much any other Yagawa game.

I forgot to turn off the rapid fire on the A button when putting in my initials.

This doesn't beat my old 7.2 million score, but that one wasn't a 1CC.

This is actually one of the easier Cave 1CCs if you ignore score items, keep your lives low, hoard bombs up until the bosses and then take them out with hadou guns. About as hard as Futari 1.5 Original in my estimation. Keep in mind I had not played this game in at least 8 years and I was pretty much just winging it a lot of the way.

I have a Reco pcb and use button 3 as a rapid fire button 1, in that way i can choose when to get high rate fire but also lock and control my options <3 with button 1.

Yes, i agree, hoard bombs and dont pick up anything else than bomb fragments and its quite an easy 1cc.

On the other hand, yesterday I reached last stage with above 8 mill, 3 lives and 3 full bombs...and I did collect almost everything i saw in the stage before.
I have never seen such an agressive rank, it was like playing Dangun feveron stage 4.  =D

You can learn where to hadou on the bosses in a day, just by watching some videos. Futari 1.5 Original involves much more actual dodging, so in that respect it is more difficult (especially the last boss). You can 1CC Ibara and only really have to dodge a few patterns on the Stage 1 boss. The other bosses you can just do 3-4 hadous and not deal with a single pattern.

Again, this is if you avoid all medals/extra powerups and just pick up bomb fragments and the power ups you need and don't go over 1 extra life in stock at a time. It is a surprisingly easy clear.

BTW, I turned on my PCB again today, and my 1CC score was gone! All the rest are there, and I put some new scores up today and those aren't erased on power down. Weird!  :-\

In Futari original you can just reaction dodge on your first runs and throw a bomb when it gets tight. Thats at least how it is for me.
Imo Ibara needs a bit more video-watching to get through and rank-control.

Ive also noticed the scores not being saved, after that I always start a new credit after my scoring run before I turn off the cab.
That seems to help...but Im not 100% sure.

This score did not save after a power down either, even though I played an extra credit right after. Every time I get a 1CC score it is erased, but every non-1CC score is saved.  :displeased:
Maybe I'll try initializing the ranking again and see if that sorts it.

Nice score. :righton:

Hm, I also noticed that in the beginning, but now my 1ccs seems to save.
Wonder what the secret trick is?  I will test again.

In gameplay I finally found the timing for milking the end phase of stage 2 boss. get it more often now.

Thanks! This was the first time I tried the st2 boss milking, I got about 1 million from it and ended st2 with 5.6 million. Lost the medal chain in st5, but all in all not a bad run. Now I need to learn the st 3 and 6 boss milking to improve my score.

Maybe after my next 1cc I will play a credit that saves another score to the scoreboard. Perhaps that will help? :-\

Nice, yeah in stage 3 boss milking Im coming there with lots of bombs but somehow Kasumi dies way to fast for me to milk as much as I want.
Need to watch some more videos.

Just got the hang of saving a hadou to the beginning of stage 2, that was some extra score.

I keep trying to play Espgaluda 2 on and off, but man, that game is kicking my arse.  I used to be OK at it and cleared it with all three characters with 300+ mil scores, but for the life of me I can't even get to Stage 6 now. I'll keep trying of course, but this is taking more work than I thought it would. I love the music in this game, it has to be Cave's best soundtrack. Magical stuff.

I'm not nearly as good at Futari 1.5 either. I have a score in Maniac around 450 mil now but that's a far cry from my old 600+mil scores.

In contrast, I find the Yagawa games (Ibara, MMP) much easier than they used to be and I'm scoring better than ever on them. Pretty weird.

Yeah, Espa 2 is not an easy game.

Got my first letter score in Ibara,
A502100
...taking the score increase step by step.  :)
I got to the last boss with three full bombs and one extra life, then totally blanked out and forgot what I was supposed to do.

I also played some Futari BL original to try to get some better score.
I reached stage four Boss without dying and quite high counter.
...then before the last pattern the boss jumps forward and leaves me with a very small area of the screen and then unleashes the final pattern.
is this normal? (Some rank effect?)
First time seeing it.

I'm not sure I've seen that final boss pattern in Original, as you describe it. Maybe it was some kind of glitch?

I've seen that happen a few times on MFBL. Similar things have happened with bosses like Madara in ESPGaluda II or a couple of the bosses in Muchi Muchi Pork, where depending on where the boss was when you broke a life bracket, it'll move to a very inconvenient spot on the screen. Super frustrating.

Will continue to hunt and Ibara is now stuck in one of my cabs for I guess a pretty long time. ;)

On another note, i have ended my search for DFK BL and had my peace with it.
Got to play the pcb over at Limpans place and I really cant stand the game, its like controlling Titanic.
Strong mode was a bit of fun so I will prolly come back in a couple of years.

After some Ibara hunting then its finally time for some Pink Sweets.
Title: Re: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread

DFK BL is a pretty eccentric game. Definitely not for everyone. I find Bomb style very frustrating (for score), and Strong style on the PCB is a mess with all the sprite/OSD flicker every two seconds. Very easy to die without knowing what hit you. They "fixed" that in the port and that is why I find the port preferable (it is also $3000+ cheaper. ;)).

My fave is B-Power style, but that just makes the whole game into a milk fest, with your ship in a corner of the screen for long stretches of time.

Pink Sweets is even more eccentric (and difficult). I admire it for its uniqueness, but I don't think it's a game I'll return to, since I've already 1CC'd it with all four characters.

Yep, the DFK BL port it is.

My goal with PS is to 1cc it without the infinite lives trick using Shasta. I dont care if it take 10 years.
I love the game and think Shasta is the most enjoyable shmup ship/weapon Ive ever come across. (Love the design also, seen in Ibara.) Lots of tricks from that Shasta superplay.  :righton:

I've started playing Espgaluda 2 again. Trying to practice the stages on the X360 port, then do runs on the PCB. The more complex scoring in this game requires great precision. It is very satisfying when you pull it off, but infuriating when you make a mistake in a run.

Any goals for 2019? Here are mine:

-200+ mil in MMP with Rafute (PCB). Still trying for this now and then, but I'll have to get more serious! I'm 11 mil away but it's a brutal climb up a steep mountain from here on out.

-Get some sort of non-garbage 1CC score in SDOJ with any ship/shot type.

-400~500mil in Espgaluda 2 1CC (PCB) with Ageha.

-Beat my old Ibara Kuro score (114mil).

I'll be happy to get more than 1 of those.

This week I've been playing DFK 1.5 with C-Power and B-Strong, and Akai Katana with Type C.

The more I play DFK 1.5 the more I am impressed by it. It is hard to choose between Power and Strong styles, both have pros and cons. Power is more fun for score, but it is so difficult to get a 2-ALL in that style, that I gravitate toward Strong just for practical reasons. I also played a bit of B-Bomb the other day and it was surprisingly fun, but I can't keep switching so many shot/play styles or I'll never get anywhere.

Akai Katana (original arcade version; I don't like the other "arrange" versions) is a killer game. I still think DSMBL is CAVE's finest hori (in depth, challenge, play style variety, etc), but I have more fun with AK because I still suck at DSMBL.  :P

True, AK Arcade ver is really amazing. Juggling that gold is such a bliss, Arrange modes are gimmicky and Limited looks Meh. (Need to try it though some day.).
Have an arcade meet-up tomorrow where we are going to dig into AK.

Also one of Caves easiest 1cc imo.

Scoring is incredible fun and suiciding gives you a longer meter, Yagawa tricks.

True. On the PCB, a better challenge is in clearing the game without dying (which is still not too hard). And after that, clearing the game without dying or bombing (which is actually rather hard). And of course, scoring well too.  ;)

On the port, in contrast, clearing the game without dying is almost as hard as clearing the PCB without dying or bombing. From what I can tell only about 20% of the PCB's slowdown is in the port, and on the Stage 5 boss in particular this makes the game at least twice as hard.

Yes, a no miss is very doable.
I need to hunt some scores in this game as its the only game I like to play for score in after Ibara. Only at 160 mill right now.

I havent played the port in ages and dont remember that so much of the slowdown was missing.
Thats kinda sad imo as the slowdown really adds to the claustrofobic feeling when you have packed bullets all around you in Ninja mode.
(The sound when you go into Ninja mode is really heavy when having a sub in the cab.)
Well, a very fun game it is.
Title: Re: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread
Post by: EOJ on May 17, 2019, 03:35:14 AM
A high scoring route in the port can be completed in about 29 minutes (e.g. on the superplay DVD) whereas on the PCB a similar route takes about 39 minutes. So 10 minutes worth of slowdown is missing. 10 minutes!!  :o

I didn't realise it was so bad until I played them back to back several times. The port feels like it has a fast-forward button on at all times. It is actually the worst CAVE X360 port in terms of slowdown accuracy, even worse than DS2.

Due to the low difficulty of the game and the overall slow bullet speed, even without all the slowdown it can still be cleared on the port without much trouble and you can still score well in it (but not as well as on the PCB).

I'm playing a lot of DFK 1.5 with B-Strong these days. I'm making progress slowly. I really love SDOJ for its simplicity, but overall, I've come to the realization that DFK 1.5 is the best Donpachi. Tremendous depth, very fun scoring, two loops, amazing graphics/sound. It checks all the boxes.

In other news, I sold my Ibara Kuro because I gave up on trying to beat my old score. Best I could muster was 99 million. It is a fun game to bust out for a 1CC once in awhile, but the scoring system is incredibly frustrating when you start attempting high-level routines -- you need both a good deal of luck and extremely precise rhythmic tapping (with both buttons and directionals). I would have kept it, but it goes for over $3000....I don't keep things that expensive unless I intend to play them seriously (for score). I could write a lot more in detail about what I love and hate about this game. Maybe someday. As a final note, it took me 10+ years but now I know the original Ibara is the better game, which, along with the fact it is worth about a third or fourth the price of Kuro, is why for the time being I have kept it.

I agree with DFK being the best Pachi.
I need to continue to hunt that 2-All, reaching that black start of the second loop is such a hype.

And Ibara, well I wont comment on that. Im too much of a fanboy. :)

Went to CAX (http://www.caextreme.org/) this weekend and had some time with MFBLAV, Dodonpachi, and Muchi Muchi Pork. There was plenty to play at the convention, but I still played a lot of those 3 even though they're all in my house. Maybe I should put those three specific games in the cabs this week and I'll just have my own extended CAX.

My Pink Sweets PCB has arrived! It feels so different compared to the 360 port, basically a new game.

There are many minor differences I can only spot now after having played both versions extensively. For example, the time between a boss' appearance on screen and the beginning of the first attack is much longer on the port. The same applies to the timeout attack of bosses, which take much longer on the port again.

Let's not even begin the issue of slowdown... The 360 port might be one of the most inaccurate ports of any CAVE game ever in this regard?
Title: Re: The "what Cave game(s) are you playing right now?" thread
Post by: EOJ on December 31, 2019, 02:19:41 PM
I didn't notice the differences in boss timings you did. I'll have to check again! Did you notice the score font is different in the port? Another needless change.

The slowdown accuracy is in the C-D range (on my scale). Among the X360 ports Akai Katana, DSII, SDOJ and Muchi Muchi Pork are worse in this regard.

The input lag is pretty bad in the port, which I'm sure you have also noticed.

Every time I think of selling my Pink Sweets PCB I play one credit of the port and quickly decide to keep it.

It's scary to think about other ports being even worse when it comes to slowdown. :o

I will certainly keep my PCB for some time. At least until I feel more or less done with the game. And considering its replay value, that's going to take a while it seems.
