It took me a few days of work and whiskey but I somehow managed to get the old database working and updated the forum software to stable version. Lots of things remain to be tweaked, and the url is now bl.cave-stg.com.
Long story short: I found this backup of the forum on an old external hdd. I had thought I'd lost it until last week when rummaging through my closet!
There's a lot of great info and discussions in these forums. I felt it was worthwhile to bring it back after 5 and a half years. Hopefully we'll have some good new discussions as well. :righton:
The forum is back! Hello there! :)
Oh Hai
:) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Nice to see you guys! It seems Plasmo's avatar is one of the few that made it through the transfer without getting messed up or deleted.
I've been thinkin about this place the last few weeks! Hoping for a good return to form.
hurra ! :D
It's alive!
Awesome! Cheers, EOJ. Used to mainly lurk here but seems like a good time to stop that trend.
Good to have you back EOJ. It's bittersweet looking back over these threads as Cave haven't done anything STG wise in 6 years but here's hoping Exa Arcadia is a success and the mysterious Pink Sweets Suicide Club turns out to be Cave dipping their toe in again.
Hello gentlemen, nice to see you all, will fix my avatar in a bit 😁
Hi All -- a very unexpected & welcomed wakeup. :: thumbs up ::
Confused, but by no means upset. Welcome back!
Really nice to see so many old and new faces!
My 'to do' list for today is to install some useful forum packages, especially a trader feedback system. We had a nice one before but it was one of many things that got lost in the transfer to smf 2.0. Unfortunately smf 1.1, which is what the old forum ran on, doesn't work properly with the current php 5.6. I got it running just barely well enough last night in order to do the transfer to smf 2.0.
Wow this was a nice surprise to wake up to.
Wow, talk about a (pleasant) surprise! Glad to see you're doing well EOJ.
I haven't even unpacked my X360 after moving several years ago. Time to rig it up and get some MMP credits in while drinking beer. :righton:
Loving the comeback!

I've only played mine a few times in recent years. But I played a few games (Futari, SDOJ, MMP) a lot over the past week. I can't remember half of the strats and my reflexes have dulled. But it's still pretty fun and I can still 1CC MMP and Futari Original.
Guess I'm gonna have to start playing Cave games again!
I just installed the trader system and somehow it retained all the old feedback ratings! That was a nice surprise.
EOJ,
Great to see you back and really appreciate you bringing back CAVE-STG!
-F
Great to see that pm this morning. Just recently I've been trying to get the "sheer grit" achievement on Akai Katana after failing a couple of years ago. This should be the much needed motivation to dig in again.
Hi all !
I almost fell off my chair when I read the email :oogle:
I'm soooo darn happy, amongst all the gaming internet communities I've been a member over the last 18 years, none had the same friendly felling than cave-stg :)
I don't play shmups almost since the forum disappeared but will certainly check new messages here every now and then :) :) :)
This is the forum that got me into CAVE games! Glad to see it back!
Now if only the rest of their backlog would come to Steam...
Well this is a blast from the past.
Talk about a blast from the past. Good to see you back EOJ. Hope the last 5+ years have been good to you.
Had some fun looking through the threads and seeing your old high score list. Apparently still far away from most scores :P
Only ever been a lurker with no account, just made one to say congratulations for the fukkatsu! :righton:
Had an "Important" email from EOJ and I was like....WHA?! Haven't heard the name "CAVE-STG" in quite a while, but I knew immediately what it was! Welcome back EOJ and everyone! My avatar was messed up but I had the original file since I just copied folders from my old laptop a few months ago. ^_^
Welcome back! :O
edit: Seems that was my first post here. Interesting
Hi everybody.
I'm trying to change the site back to 'cave-stg.com' instead of 'bl.cave-stg.com'. There may be some glitches while this happens. I'll get it sorted ASAP, but just wanted to give you all a heads up.
I'm nowhere near as 'hardcore' as many of you, but CAVE games were always my favorite and this place was my go-to place. The return of the forums, and EOJ, bring a smile to my face. Looking forward to coming back. So psyched. :D :D :righton:
I miss adverse.
BULLETS TURN TO GOLD.
O hai EOJ!
Yay! It's back!
Welcome back, EOJ! First-time member, but I lurked around constantly. This site got me interested in getting all the Cave Xbox 360 releases, hence the numbers via my username. I have all them, with exception to Instant Brain as it's a visual novel. I also have all the Love games (including GeSen Love) and Qute games. I'll probably get Natsuki Chronicles, whenever that comes out, despite not being interested in Xbox One.
Okay, I've changed the url back to the proper one and I think I fixed all the glitches. Still some more mods to install and whatnot, but I think we're good to go now.
And hello to those posters above me!
Forgot to mention, thanks for the revival. I had tried to archive the forum before it went away. I failed miserably.

Forgot to mention, thanks for the revival. I had tried to archive the forum before it went away. I failed miserably.
Hey, really nice to see you here again!
The story of this archive is that, on the day I pulled the site down I did a full back up of everything. This was two computers ago on an old external hdd. I had long sold the computer itself and wiped the data clean. This external hdd is quite old, and I haven't used it since this backup in 2012. I tossed it in a shipping box when I moved from Japan, and stuffed it in the back of my closet in my new place. After several years, I totally forgot about it, until last week.
I don't regret pulling the site down back in 2012, but I am sorry for any inconvenience it caused others. At the time I was
really burnt out on these games, and the scene in general, and I felt it was an unhealthy and unproductive part of my life. I needed to focus on my family and work. It was the right decision for me at the time. It was quite liberating, actually! I moved on to other hobbies, particularly electric guitars (playing, buying, selling, fixing, researching, setting up, etc), which are still a great passion of mine.
In 2018, I am able to appreciate Cave and their games in a different, more reserved fashion, and I am more interested in studying aspects of the legacy of the company, as well as the fluctuations in the prices of their goods both past and present. I do hope to explore score-attacking a few of their games again, but I suspect it won't be with the same dedication I embraced in my younger years.
Good to see this place back again, along with a few names I've not really seen in a few years.
Glad to see there was a working archive, and glad to be back here again! :righton:

Well isn't that how it goes? I have four children now. But back when DOJ came out on the PS2, I was obsessed. Those two worlds simply cannot merge ever again.
I just grabbed a 360 for dirt cheap after mine RRODed years ago. Going back for some SDOJ runs was refreshing, especially without the rigorous constraint of *must.score.more*.
We all hope you find that balance and that cave-stg doesn't weigh you down. Glad you're back!
I think I've found balance in the force. :righton:
But yeah, you're right about having kids and dedicating yourself to scoring in these games. Not very realistic anymore. That's OK. It was a fun ride while it lasted. Maybe we can teach the next generation.
I love SDOJ because it's pretty much the only game I enjoy just blasting my way through without paying attention to the scoring. It's a really good challenge.
Wasn't there a general thread about the ports quality/accuracy? I can't find it. ^^"
IIRC it could be expanded. That would be useful as even on the farm precision info on particular games is sometimes quite scattered (just try to find talk exclusively about Donpachi ports: you'll find 100 posts about the DoDonpachi ones...)
Also maybe a reminder list of all the non-ported games like some matsuri prize exclusives etc, would be great. <3
Thanks for bringing it back, EOJ! Also nice to see you playing these games again.

I think both of those were from the wordpress part of the old site. I also have that backup but I don't think I'm going to install WP again. I'm just going to stick with a forum this time. I'll try to just get the data out of the WP files and post it here in the forums.

Thanks! Too bad I suck now. I just played Akai Katana and couldn't get past the 4th boss.
You will be very surprised how quickly your skills come back. It's like riding the bike or swimming.
Great to have this site back. I remember messaging EOJ some time ago elsewhere that I wanted this site back. I've always felt there's never been a real replacement in the 6 years since it went down, so it's very welcome for it to be back.
Great to see the site return. I certainly used it as a handy point of information during the 360 shmup era, but never got around to registering back then. I'm glad I can finally rectify that oversight!
Oh god, I can't believe it! Finally, I got the opportunity to create an account on the legendary mystic cave-stg forum!
Thank you for bringing CAVE-STG back to life again, eoj! :righton:
Good News! Thanks EOJ.
Every 6-odd months since the closure I'd think about this place, I recently borrowed a mates 360 to get back into shmups too, what perfect timing
I'm so happy this place is back man <3
Awesome to have this forum back! Thanks EOJ.
Yay, really cool to have the CAVE-STG forum back online. I became a member back in 2012, but did not post anything back then, I just lurked! :)
Hola!! So nice from you to bring back the forum. It is also great to see lots of old faces. Kaneda, are you still in Japan?
I recently moved and yesterday I was going through my PCB collection and making sure there was no battery leaking. Replace the ones in Ibara, Mushihimesama and Futari BL just in case... and right after, I get this message about cave-stg coming back to life!? What the... XD
Anyways, thank you so much EOJ!!
Hello everyone, some of you might recognize from the shmups forums. I started getting into Cave shmups back in 2014, long after the original closure of this place. Today, I don't play shmups nearly as much as I used to but I still like collecting them and listening to shmup OSTs. :) Glad to see a place as beloved as this come back! :D
Thank you!

 Seems the stars were all aligned. I've heard a few stories like this recently. Weird!
Wow, talk about a blast from the past. This was really unexpected! It's nice to see you around again, EOJ, and all of the other old names that I haven't seen in forever!
Like a lot of others, I kind of moved away from the scene years ago as life became busier. I sold my supergun and all my PCB's but still hook up my X360 sometimes. I also have a few of the ports on PC. It's fun going back through these threads though. I'm glad you were able to restore all of this EOJ! Maybe this forum will reignite my love of shmups again. :righton:
Wow, Cave-STG back from the dead? Amazing.
I remember a lot of you guys from the old days. I've been pretty much retired from shmups since the last high score in Progear.
Good to see this site back from the dead!
Edit: "At the time I was really burnt out on these games, and the scene in general, and I felt it was an unhealthy and unproductive part of my life. I needed to focus on my family and work.'
I can relate with you on that, EOJ. Minus the family, but life in general. I burned myself out so hard on Progear that I lost the motivation to play any more of danmaku games and completely lost interest in the genre. I went on having a productive life after that, and I don't regret it. Happy to be back and lurking this forum besides shmup forums!
Just wanted to say a final thanks to all the posters in this thread. It's so cool to see so many of you from the old days (and a few new faces) turn up here in 2018. I never expected more than a few people to post, actually! The positive response has been overwhelming.
Sorry for the late post but... Welcome back EOJ, great to see cave-stg is back up and running, I'll try and visit more often ;)
:righton:
Posting another hello because I fell off the face of the earth right about the time this got revived (March).
Had a crazy illness that kicked my ass much of the year, but after much attention to that... with any luck I'll be a bit more active again.
Again, really glad to see this place alive!
Sorry to hear about your illness, but it sounds like you are doing better. :righton:
There has not been much activity on these forums in recent months, but here's hoping that changes in the coming year.
brentsg is alive! Been a while. I hope everything is better now :)
The good news is that while you've been away your CV1000 stock has continued to soar.
I just paid to renew the site and webhosting for another 3 years, so I thought it would be appropriate to bump this thread on its 3 year anniversary. Most people in this thread have disappeared, but you're all welcome back at any time.
Keep on CAVE-shootin'. :righton:
We really appreciate your efforts man. Thank you for keeping this little part of us, alive a little longer :righton:
Yep. Thanks EOJ. The forum is certainly quieter than it once was (and that's hardly surprising given CAVE haven't developed a proper shmup in almost a decade) but I'm sure there are a lot of lurkers making use of the many handy resources here.
Thanks for keeping the forum up!
I still use it as a resource on a regular basis. Great site! :righton:
Yeah, big thanks! I am not a very active member on any forum these days. But I lurk and read a lot. The amount of information here is priceless. It has helped me become a better player for sure. Not that I am very good today, but better than I used to be.
Much appreciated EOJ. Thanks !
Cheers, fellas (and any gals, if you're out there). =D
A common theme is "it's a great resource". I am glad for that, but I hope it will again be a "great, active community", like it was back in the day. Unfortunately, it doesn't look to be moving in that direction. No matter what I do, I'm not sure the site can compete with twitter, youtube and the discords these days! The internet is survival of the fittest, and after a certain point there is not much you can do to push back against the inertia.
There is someone named Starcreator who has lied about me for years on Neogaf and Resetera in long tirades. Some insane story that I banned him in 2012 before I shut down the site, for no reason at all, and thus I am a 'tyrant' and a terrible person. If you check his post history here, you'll see that's not true (and anyone around here in 2012 knows it's not true). He was posting here right up to the end. I had no problem with him in 2012. He seemed nice and his posts were good. He's not even banned here, even after I read this garbage! That's because I sorta feel bad for him. Anyone who makes up a bunch of lies about some nobody (and in the grand scheme of the internet, I'm a nobody) and spends their time posting these lies on large web forums has some serious problems. Anyway, I have a hunch crazy lies like this have been spread and pushed people away from the site. So I'm just setting the record straight here in case anyone cares to know the truth.
Anyway, I don't want to dwell on the negative. I'll keep posting the same content I always have, and welcoming any members (new or old) to join in.
First I've heard of these crazy lies. I don't think that has anything to do with it. I think you're right that the community is spread more thinly these days, but it's mainly because when the forum started, CAVE were releasing around two arcade games and/or two ports a year. Different times.
Thanks for keeping this place alive!

No problem! It'll be around until I'm old and gray and my joints ache too much to dodge the bullets. At that point, if there's any interest left, I'll give the site to someone else to carry on. That's my plan, at least.

Hopefully you're right. In any case I'm glad to have finally addressed these lies (I've known about them for many years) and publicly disproved them.
Without new releases, as said above, this place is definitely more of an archive, with huge value, than an active community. However, I prefer forums over Discord for some information, as it's easier to follow etc. Discord is nice for chat, but for a proper discussion, is actually really useful to have more documented forum posts.
I'll be posting more, moving forwards, I just need to find the right sub forums to post :)
