Last day is January 31st.

I have lots of great memories playing CAVE games there in 2009 and 2011-2013. Really sad to see this one go. :'(

I played through the first half of Samurai Spirits RPG, the English translated version, on the Neo Geo CD. It took me about 9.5 hours, and I selected Nakoruru as the main character. Pretty simplistic game, but worth it for a play through due to the incredible artwork and animation, which is in a class of its own. The encounter rate is really high, which makes it a drag after awhile, so I'm not sure I'm going to play through the second half (which is a separate story) any time soon. But I'm glad I finally played this after all these years! The English translation is excellent, by the way. And the pixel art is just gorgeous:

After 27 years, I finally finished Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean yesterday. It only took me 15 hours, and I had to use a guide to get through the convoluted last dungeon, but I really enjoyed it overall. I'm a big fan of simple JRPGs that don't overstay their welcome, with great pixel art and nice music. Working Design's translation is goofy fun, very '90s in all the best and worst ways. I bought this game in 1997, soon after it came out. I loved what I played of it then, but it kept crashing during loading screens, and this became so frustrating I gave up on playing it and soon sold it off the next year (by then the game was already rare, and I was surprised that the shop that bought it from me gave me nearly the same amount I paid for it new). I've read this is a common problem with the game.

Other Games / The Sega Saturn Thread
Last post by EOJ - December 22, 2024, 07:54:49 PM
I thought it would be good to open a thread on this console since I've been playing a lot of these games recently. Post about any Saturn games you're playing, or any of your favorites from the past! Feel free to ask questions about the games here too.

I owned a Saturn back in the mid-90s and enjoyed many games on it (Dragon Force, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, Grandia, Virtua Fighter 2, etc.), but there were many others I never played. I've discovered the joy of playing these through the mednafen core in Openemu on my mac, which plays everything I've thrown at it perfectly (or at least, close enough that I can't really tell any differences). The ability to use save states really helps out on many of the RPGs on the console, which often had save points spread too far apart, requiring one to play 1-2 hours to get to the next point. These days I can only play in bite-sized time slots, so this is a real boon for me.

Disappointing but not entirely unexpected.

I'll just wait for the physical release though. Hopefully they'll update with a translation by then.

Someone tested the input lag:

https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=1569649#p1569649

They found it is 5.75 frames, compared to 4.75 on the X360. So, as expected (unfortunately). I don't think I'll buy this, as I don't want to support Livewire's lazy, sub-par "cash grab" ports anymore. I really regretted buying the Espgaluda 2 Switch port (it has 4 frames of lag compared to the X360's 3 frames).

Livewire's Mushi and DFK ports have 3 frames of lag, but that is because they are ported from the Steam versions that have 2 frames.

This is available on the USA eshop now, for $35:

https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/dodonpachi-saidaioujou-switch/

According to the listing the game is only in Japanese, so they didn't even bother to translate the text this time.  :displeased:

I'll wait to hear some impressions on the lag and slowdown accuracy before I spend the cash. And/or I'll just wait for a sale.

Poor choice of words on my behalf it should have read "ported to a current system" instead.

Appreciate it is unlikely to add anything beyond the 360 port in gameplay and modes.

Quote from: Codiene on December 04, 2024, 03:34:44 PMglad it is at least getting an updated port.

I doubt anything will be updated (the previous livewire ports certainly didn't update anything). It will probably have an extra frame of lag and no online leaderboards, which will make it a downgraded port.
