CAVE Games / Does anyone know the specifica...

Might be a bit of an odd question, but does anyone have a photo or else of the Ketsui bosses with their lengths and widths and weight readable? They were sold as stationary at the 2018 Matsuri, and there also appears to have been a screensaver with them in the same year, though I can't find either. So far I've only got the Stage 1 and Stage 4 bosses (Bullfrog and Cinderella Amber); I'd really appreciate it if someone were able to help me out here with a picture of the stationary or otherwise.

After playing through Albert Odyssey on the Saturn, I've moved on to Tengai Makyou Zero on the Super Famicom (the new English translation), and I'm also playing through Emio on the Switch because I kept putting that off to play other games.

I got an Xbox Series X for Christmas, and that has been fun to explore as well. About half of my digital X360 games play on it. I mostly wanted the console for the Killer Instinct Classic 1 and 2 games, as I am a big fan of those and I haven't played them since the arcades in the 90s. I found a copy of the Definitive Edition, as apparently that's the only way to play them now unless you subscribe to Gamepass (which I have no interest in doing). It's also nice to have them on a disc. I also got Starfield for my XSX, but not sure when I'm going to get around to playing that.

In other news I played a credit of SDOJ on my X360 to see if I could still 1CC it (inspired by the recent Switch port which I have not played and do not intend to buy unless it's dirt cheap), as I haven't played it since I sold the PCB a year and a half ago. First try, and I pulled out a 1CC with A-Shot (using a $14 third-party wired pad with annoyingly loud clicky buttons). Still got it. :righton: Nice to see the leaderboards are still up and the replays are available to download (unlike the Switch version!).

My Japanese X360 was made in August 2010, so it's over 14 years old. Pretty amazed it still works perfectly (though the wireless pad stopped working years ago).

First time there's been a home port of an EXA arcade game, pretty interesting & exciting! Releases on 23 January, digital only for now.

All the gameplay changes from the EXA game will be in there, and that's the important thing. According to Shou at EXA, EXA's English localization, videos, title screen art, and added voices cannot be included for contractual reasons, but that's not a big deal as it's mostly fluff. I don't expect this port to achieve the EXA version's 2 frames of input lag due to the Switch being incapable of doing this in any game (AFAIK), but if the Switch version can achieve 3-4 frames of lag, it'll be acceptable.

I still have the original version on my Xbox 360, and it even works on my Xbox Series X!

Last day is January 31st.

I have lots of great memories playing CAVE games there in 2009 and 2011-2013. Really sad to see this one go. :'(

I played through the first half of Samurai Spirits RPG, the English translated version, on the Neo Geo CD. It took me about 9.5 hours, and I selected Nakoruru as the main character. Pretty simplistic game, but worth it for a play through due to the incredible artwork and animation, which is in a class of its own. The encounter rate is really high, which makes it a drag after awhile, so I'm not sure I'm going to play through the second half (which is a separate story) any time soon. But I'm glad I finally played this after all these years! The English translation is excellent, by the way. And the pixel art is just gorgeous:

After 27 years, I finally finished Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean yesterday. It only took me 15 hours, and I had to use a guide to get through the convoluted last dungeon, but I really enjoyed it overall. I'm a big fan of simple JRPGs that don't overstay their welcome, with great pixel art and nice music. Working Design's translation is goofy fun, very '90s in all the best and worst ways. I bought this game in 1997, soon after it came out. I loved what I played of it then, but it kept crashing during loading screens, and this became so frustrating I gave up on playing it and soon sold it off the next year (by then the game was already rare, and I was surprised that the shop that bought it from me gave me nearly the same amount I paid for it new). I've read this is a common problem with the game.

Other Games / The Sega Saturn Thread
Last post by EOJ - December 22, 2024, 07:54:49 PM
I thought it would be good to open a thread on this console since I've been playing a lot of these games recently. Post about any Saturn games you're playing, or any of your favorites from the past! Feel free to ask questions about the games here too.

I owned a Saturn back in the mid-90s and enjoyed many games on it (Dragon Force, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue, Grandia, Virtua Fighter 2, etc.), but there were many others I never played. I've discovered the joy of playing these through the mednafen core in Openemu on my mac, which plays everything I've thrown at it perfectly (or at least, close enough that I can't really tell any differences). The ability to use save states really helps out on many of the RPGs on the console, which often had save points spread too far apart, requiring one to play 1-2 hours to get to the next point. These days I can only play in bite-sized time slots, so this is a real boon for me.

Disappointing but not entirely unexpected.

I'll just wait for the physical release though. Hopefully they'll update with a translation by then.

Someone tested the input lag:

https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=1569649#p1569649

They found it is 5.75 frames, compared to 4.75 on the X360. So, as expected (unfortunately). I don't think I'll buy this, as I don't want to support Livewire's lazy, sub-par "cash grab" ports anymore. I really regretted buying the Espgaluda 2 Switch port (it has 4 frames of lag compared to the X360's 3 frames).

Livewire's Mushi and DFK ports have 3 frames of lag, but that is because they are ported from the Steam versions that have 2 frames.
